Bavarian State Ministry of Science and the Arts

The Free State of Bavaria is the largest and oldest state in Germany with a first-rate science and research reputation and a major source of innovation and progress. In May 2023, the Queensland Government signed the Declaration of Intent (DoI) (PDF, 596.2KB) with the Bavarian State Ministry of Science and the Arts (Bayerisches Staatsministerium für Wissenschaft und Kunst) to strengthen cooperation in research, development and industry collaboration between Queensland and Bavaria. The intent of the six-year agreement is to establish a productive long-term relationship with the priorities for collaboration that include:

  • energy (including green hydrogen, synthetic fuels and energy storage)
  • cleantech and emission reduction technologies
  • artificial intelligence (AI)
  • quantum technologies
  • additive manufacturing
  • life sciences, biomedical research and bioeconomy
  • aerospace.

The Bavarian Government’s Hightech Agenda Bavaria has committed an investment of €5.5bn (AUS9.1bn) over 2020 – 2027 in research in innovative future technologies. Flagship projects of the initiative include the Leibniz Supercomputing Centre which enable academics and researchers to perform the most complex calculations with one of the world’s most powerful supercomputers; the Munich Quantum Valley platform that has the primary goal of developing and operating competitive quantum computers; and the Munich Center for Machine Learning and the Munich Institute of Robotics and Machine Learning who undertake world-class research and development in Artificial Intelligence.

Bavaria is the corporate headquarters for many global companies, including Airbus (Defence and Space), Rohde & Schwarz GmbH & Co KG, BMW, Audi, Allianz, Munich Re, Siemens, Infineon Technologies, Knorr-Bremse, MAN Truck & Bus, the Linde Group and MTU Aero Engines.
